Trade Accreditations Explained: What They Mean for Homeowners in Wales

Gas Safe Register

What it is: The statutory register of gas engineers in Wales and the UK, mandated by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Replaced CORGI in 2009.

What it means: An engineer on the Gas Safe Register has been assessed and certified to carry out gas work to HSE safety standards. The specific appliance categories on their card define what they are qualified to work on.

Why it matters: It is a criminal offence for an unregistered person to carry out gas work on domestic premises. If your home insurance or building warranty requires Gas Safe certificates, only registered engineers' work qualifies.

How to verify: gassaferegister.co.uk โ€” search by name, business, or registration number. Free and instant.

Electrical accreditations

NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA are the three main competent person scheme (CPS) providers for electricians. To be registered with any of these, an electrician must demonstrate technical competency and undergo annual assessment.

Registration with a CPS means:

  • The electrician can self-certify their work complies with BS 7671 (the wiring regulations)
  • Building control is automatically notified without a separate application
  • The work is registered and backed by a guarantee scheme

Without registration: An electrician can carry out the work, but a separate Part P Building Regulations application must be made to the local authority for notifiable work. The work must then be inspected and signed off independently.

How to verify: niceic.com, napit.org.uk, elecsa.co.uk โ€” all have contractor search tools.

Builder accreditations

Unlike gas and electrical work, there is no statutory registration requirement for builders. This makes quality verification more reliant on voluntary schemes:

FMB (Federation of Master Builders): Members sign up to a Code of Practice, are independently inspected, and have access to FMB's dispute resolution and deposit indemnity schemes.

TrustMark: A government-endorsed quality scheme covering a wide range of trades. Members are vetted for technical competence and customer service.

NHBC (National House Building Council): For new build and significant renovation work, NHBC registration covers latent defect warranties (10-year Buildmark policy).

Neither FMB nor TrustMark membership guarantees quality โ€” they reduce risk. Always check references independently.

Roofing accreditations

NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors): The principal trade body for roofing in Wales and the UK. Members are assessed for technical competence and operate a deposit protection scheme. Also provides dispute resolution.

TrustMark: Available for roofers as well as builders.

A notable feature of NFRC membership is the deposit protection scheme โ€” if your NFRC roofer ceases trading during or before a job, your deposit is protected. This is valuable given that deposits for full re-roofs can be ยฃ1,000โ€“3,000.

Heating and HVAC accreditations

Gas Safe Register โ€” see above. Mandatory for gas heating engineers.

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme): Required for installers claiming the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) ยฃ7,500 grant for heat pumps. Also covers solar PV and solar thermal. Find registered installers at mcscertified.com.

F-Gas certification: Required for any engineer working with refrigerants (air conditioning systems, heat pumps). Issued by Refcom, City & Guilds, and others.

OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) EV charger scheme: Required for installers of EV charging points to meet OZEV installer standards. Relevant for electricians fitting domestic EV chargers.

Manufacturer accreditation (Worcester Bosch AAI, Vaillant Advanced Installer, etc.): These manufacturer schemes extend boiler warranties from 2 years to 7โ€“10 years. Not a safety requirement, but highly valuable from a warranty perspective. Most competent heating engineers in Wales are accredited to at least one manufacturer.
