What is Gas Safe Register?
Legally required for gas workThe Gas Safe Register is the official list of engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas appliances in the UK. By law, anyone installing, servicing or repairing a boiler, gas cooker or gas fire must be on it. It replaced CORGI registration in 2009.
Do you need it?
Yes, for any gas work. Using an unregistered person to fit or repair a gas appliance is illegal and dangerous. Always check before work starts, not after.
How to check it
Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card (it shows a photo, a licence number and the gas work they’re qualified for), then confirm it on the official register at gassaferegister.co.uk. The card also lists an expiry date, so make sure it’s current.

Is Gas Safe registration a legal requirement?
Yes. Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, anyone who works on gas appliances for a customer must be Gas Safe registered. It is a criminal offence to do gas work without it.
What replaced CORGI?
The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the official gas registration body in Great Britain on 1 April 2009. A CORGI certificate is no longer valid proof of registration.
