What is FMB?
Recommended for buildersThe FMB (Federation of Master Builders) is the UK’s largest trade association for small and medium building firms. Membership requires an independent inspection of the builder’s work and finances, and gives homeowners access to dispute resolution and optional insurance-backed warranties.
Do you need it?
Not a legal requirement, but a strong trust signal for bigger jobs like extensions and renovations. FMB membership means the builder has been independently vetted and you have a route to resolve disputes.

Search the “Find a Builder” directory at fmb.org.uk to confirm current membership, and ask about the FMB warranty and contract on larger projects.
