Are there extra fees on top of the headstone?
Yes. Cemetery or churchyard permit fees of £100 to £300 are paid separately to the burial authority, and most cemeteries and churchyards also charge a setting (fixing) fee of £150 to £400 for the mason to install the memorial.
How long should I wait before putting up a headstone?
As a general rule, wait at least 6 to 12 months after a burial before erecting an upright headstone, so the ground can settle. For cremated remains in a dedicated plot the wait is usually around 3 to 6 months.
What should I check before hiring a memorial mason?
Use a mason on the British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons (BRAMM), whose members pass a competency assessment in safe installation. Also ask whether the quote includes VAT, delivery and installation.
